The release of the new Sony Ericsson W960i Walkman phone was delayed by the manufacturer late last year in November, there were no official reasons given by the company but the rumors started to fly around the dedicated mobile phone blogs and message boards all the same.
The handset was eventually launched last week on O2 by the CPW Group, this is a normal move by the retailer as there preferred network is O2 for all exclusive and new handset releases. However, something happened that was slightly out of the ordinary, the company then launched this brand new, high specification handset onto the pay as you go network.
Usually, the networks and retailers tend to hold off on this approach because they generate far more revenue from selling mobile phones with contract deals but this does open up a whole new customer base for them.
To gain a mobile phone with a contract agreement a customer has to pass what is known as a credit check by the network to which the phone is to be connected, the terms are set out by the individual networks and so sometimes customers will pass a credit check for one networks and not another, however with pay as you go mobile phones there is no such thing.
Although the customer will pay far more money up front for the handset, they are not tied into an agreement which means that there are no ongoing line rental charges and also no free minutes and text to use. The user simply pays for the time that they use the phone by buying vouchers or directly over the phone.
This method of owning a mobile phone is ideal for those with bad credit but also for those who may have lost their phone or simply do not use it enough to warrant paying monthly fees.
The emergence of the Sony Ericsson W960i onto the pay as you go network is surprising simply because it is classed as a top end handset. That is to say that it offers the latest features and technology that Sony Ericsson has to offer.
The W960i offers an 8GB memory which for music lovers is ideal for saving thousands of their favorite songs to play via the Walkman player – a dedicated MP3 player with extra features and options that enhance the listening experience.
The phone also offers a 2.6 inch full color touchscreen for navigating the menu system and viewing videos and documents as well as handwriting recognition for easy text input when writing text messages and emails.
There is a 3.2 megapixel camera with integrated flash, zoom, autofocus and video recording capabilities, users can capture quality pictures and video clips before sharing them with other devices either using Bluetooth, MMS, SMS or email attachment.
The W960i Walkman is also a 3G enabled handset allowing for fast downloading of new music tracks as well as access to the latest news and sports headlines, new movie trailers and a wealth of new mobile content such as games, ringtones and graphics. The 3G also facilitates face to face video calling so that both callers can see exactly who they are speaking with by utilising a secondary dedicated camera on the front of the phone.
As you can see the Sony Ericsson W960i is a powerful music phone with a equally powerful camera, making this an all around entertainment and business device. With the early release onto the pay as you go market, it is sure to see high sales volumes from both
angles.
